You follow a skincare routine to maintain your radiant good looks, making sure you remove make up and slather your skin with moisturisers and serums. But what about your hair? It needs the same care and attention to keep it healthy, glossy and manageable.
With this in mind, Our stylist at Orenda Hair have put together a 6 step hair care routine that will have you hair looking its best.
1. CLEANSE YOUR SCALP
Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp.
The health of your scalp determines the health of your hair.
It is essential that the hair follicules are kept clean, and free from dead skin cells, excess oils and excess product. Clogged follicules can lead to breakage, dry hair and in extreme cases hair loss
A scalp that has been stripped of the natural oils (sebum) will be unbalanced and this can lead to flakiness, inflammation, hair breakage and dull hair.
Scalp conditions such a psoriasis and Dandruff can be controlled much easier if your scalp is healthy.
Using a scalp cleanser or scrub can help
Remove impurities from the scalp
Exfoliate the dead skin cells
Revive an irritated scalp
Balance the scalps natural Ph and oils
stimulate blood flow
nourish and revitalise
Medicated scalp cleaners can also help with scalp concerns such as dandruff and flakiness
How often do you need to cleanse your scalp?
This will vary from person to person, depending on your hair type, condition, products used and time between shampoos.
For a normal scalp, that gets washed 2-3 times a week, once every 4 to 6 weeks it's time for a scalp cleanse.
We have a range of products we can recommend for scalp health
Your stylist can recommend what is best for you.

2. DETOX YOUR HAIR
Remove product build up and impurities
A hair detox or deep cleanse rids your hair of all the chemicals, and pollutants that have built up on your hair from products and the environment.
These build ups can leave your hair dull, weighed down and prone to dryness and breakage
Using a deep cleansing shampoo prior to treating your hair with a mask or deep conditioner will help to
refresh and restore your hair
bring back the bounce and shine.
prepare the hair to absorb nutrients from conditioners and treatment
How often should you detox your hair?
Again it depends on how often you shampoo your hair and what products you use, but we would recommend anywhere from weekly to monthly. We would also recommend that you do a treatment after detoxing.
Our suggestions
In the Kevin Murphy range
MAIX.WASH is a gentle detoxifying shampoo that removes build up without stripping the natural oils or your colour
In the Dun Gud range
RESET shampoo this shampoo removes build up to purify the hair.
3.SHAMPOO
Cleanse and prepare the hair for conditioning
Shampoo will gently cleanse the hair and scalp of dirt and excess oils that build up in the hair.
It is important to use a shampoo that is formulated for your hair type and condition that doesn't strip the hair of essential oil and moisture.
We also recommend shampoo's that contain no sulphates & parbens. They are more gentle on your hair and better for the environment.
How often should you shampoo?
This is a question that we get asked regularly
How often you shampoo is entirely up to you and how quickly your hair becomes limp and oily.
Thin and fine hair tends to get greasy sooner so every 2-3 days
Coarser, thicker and drier hair can usually go longer between shampoos for example 5 - 7 days
If you do lots of sweaty exercise, use a lot of styling product or work in a grimy environment you may need to wash more often,
Generally it is best not to shampoo every day as you dont want to dry out the hair, or over stimulate the scalp, creating more oil
For the in-between days invest in a dry shampoo..
Your stylist can advise you on the best shampoo for your specific hair type and condition.
4. CONDITION
Nourish, hydrate and detangle
Conditioners are the next step after cleansing the the hair. A conditioner smooths the hair cuticle (outer layer) to add shine, eliminate static and reduce friction that can cause breakage.
They are formulated to deliver nutrients and moisturising ingredients to the nourish and hydrate the hair.
When selecting a conditioner, it’s important to pick the right kind for your hair type as different formulations have ingredients that offer different benefits. such as
Moisturisers and oils to make hair soft and flexibleProteins to help repair damage
Thickening ingredients to make hair feel fuller
Anti-oxidants to help protect and repair
Vitamins to restore and nourish
Humectants to control frizz and smooth the hair
some contain colour pigments to prevent colour fade and tone
When and how to use conditioners
Rinse out conditioners
After you have rinsed out all the shampoo
squeeze out the excess moisture,
apply conditioner (between a 10c and 50c size) evenly from mid length to ends,
massage throughout the hair and comb to distribute
leave to penetrate for 1-3 minutes
rinse thoroughly
Leave- in conditioners and moisturisers
as the name states these are deigned to be left in the hair and not rinsed out
They are usually lighter in formula and can be used in place of a rinse out for finer hair or can be used along side a rinse out for dry or damaged hair
After shampooing hair, towel dry and apply leave-in product according to instructions
gently comb through to distribute
5. TREAT
Extra care for specific hair needs
Just like in your skin care routine you may use a mask or serum to target specific skin concerns, you hair you should use a hair treatment or hair mask regularly to restore the health of your hair, prevent damage and help fix any hair problems you might have.
How often should you treat your hair?
Our stylist recommend using an intense moisturising or repair treatment or masque between once a week and once a month depending on your specific needs.
Other treatments for specific targeted problems may be used every time you shampoo your hair.
Ask your stylist as they will be able to prescribe the best products and explain how to use them.
Kevin Murphy treatment range is extensive with
Masques for repair, colour protection, hydration
Leave-in treatments for hydration, plumping, damage repair
Oils and sprays for rejuvenation and shine
Evo has a great selection also
Masks for moisture and repair
Curl treatments for hydration and bounce
Cuticle sealers for smoothing and repair
Leave- in treatments for strengthening and moisturising
6.PROTECT
protect hair from damage
The last step in your hair care regime is to protect you locks from the damaging effects of the environment, heat, chemicals and ageing.
Protect from heat damage every time you use heat.
Using heated tools, even blowdrying and the heat from the sun can dry and damage hair making it brittle and prone to breaking. Using a thermal protector like Kevin Murphy HEATED.DEFENCE or Evo EASY TIGER will reduce damage and increase shine.
products like Evo HAPPY CAMPERS or DAY OF GRACE have UV protection as well as heat protection.
Protect it from ageing and becoming brittle and dry .
Just like your skin, exposure to the environment and with ageing our hair becomes dryer and less elastic. This can cause breakage, split ends and dehydration, all making hair harder to manage and look dull and lifeless.
To combat this use products like Kevin Murphy YOUNG.AGAIN OIL or Evo LOVE PERPETUA SHINE DROPS.
