When you leave the salon you hair is smooth and bouncy, extra shiny and looks awesome. This awesomeness usually lasts 3 - 5 days and then you try to blow dry it and It’s not as bouncy and perfect.. The hair cut is great, it just you and your blowdrying skills...
Here is our step by step guide to a beautiful blow out at home
1. GET A HAIR CUT
Dont expect a long lasting, bouncy blow-out with out having some layers. Layering lightens the hair giving it shape and volume..
2. GET YOUR TOOLS READY
Firstly make sure you are prepared and have all the right equipment.
You'll need:
A blowdryer with a nozzle, one with variable heat settings and speeds.
Sectioning clips are a must
A paddle brush for detangling and brushing out
A round brush for styling. If you’ve got fine hair, a round brush with a metal centre is going to give you volume, and If you’ve got curly hair that you want to make smoother a natural bristle round brush is best. The size of the barrel of the brush will also determine the amount of curl and volume you will achieve, the more times the hair wraps around the tighter the curl.
If you find it hard to use both a brush and a dryer at the dame time you could use the Hot tools volumising brush. It's both tools in one.
velcro rollers to reinforce the curl and volume (optional)
3. PREPARE YOUR HAIR
The next step to a great result is preparing the hair, you want to make sure the hair is clean and well conditioned.
Use the right products for your hair type, your stylist can advise you.
To eliminate frizz, comb the conditioner through your hair in the shower with a wide tooth comb.
Make sure you rinse really well and if you can stand it, a cool rinse will help with shine and body.
When you get out of the shower, don't rub your hair, just gently wrap it in a towel like a turban to gently absorb the water.
Once you unwrap your hair gently squeeze out the excess water so it not dripping and comb with a tangle teaser or paddle brush to make sure there are no knots and tangles. At this stage if you hair needs a little more moisturising evenly distribute a leave in treatment while you are detangling.
Comb it into place and make your parting
4. APPLY STYLING PRODUCTS
You will need 2 - 3 styling products depending on your hair type, texture and condition.
One or more of your products should contain thermal protection from the heat of the blowdryer and the others will assist with hold, volume, de-frizzing or smoothing.
Always apply the products evenly throughout the hair and for best results comb through to distribute.
5. DRY THE ROOTS & CREATE VOLUME
Tip your head upside down and begin drying your hair, starting at the root area, working towards the ends using your fingers or paddle brush until the hair is about 75% dry.
Making sure you are directing the hair down the hair as this keeps the hair smooth.
Use medium heat and speed so you don't burn your hair or make it frizzy.
6. SECTION AND ROUND BRUSH
Flip your hair back over
Separate the front from the back and the top from the bottom and clip.
Starting at the front lower layers take 2-3cm defined sections.
Dry each section lifting the hair up, rolling it over the brush and with even tension stretching up and out through the round brush from root to the ends out until the section is completely dry.
The air should be directed down the hair to keep it smooth and the higher you lift the section the more volume and bounce you will achieve.
Once the section dry wrap the section around the brush, roll up and give it a shot of cold air while it's is wrapped around the brush, this sets the style and adds bounce.
Continue to the top then to the other side and back until it is completely dry
Make sure each section is completely dry or your style will be frizzy and not last
If your hair goes flat or flops easily you can wrap each section in a roller after you have dried it and let cool. Taking them out when the entire head is completed and cool. This gives extra hold.
7. STYLE AND FINISH
Using your fingers or your paddle brush shape the ends and style.
For more body and lift use a styling powder or a texture spray at the roots.
Once you're happy with how its sitting finish with hairspray or shine spray
